STRATEGIC RECOMMENDATIONS

Eliminate all single-use plastic packaging by 2026

    • Replace plastic lamination with FSC-certified recycled cardboard and paper

    • Replace plastic packaging with TIPA compostable zipper pouches

  1. Avoid “over-packaging”

  2. Optimise packaging to improve shipping efficiency

    • Redesign packaging for optimum stackability in transit*

    • Reduce packaging weight using ultra-light plant-based micro-fibrillated cellulose

  3. Utilize Eco-Friendly Raw Materials

    • Replace conventional petroleum-based ink with more safe and sustainable algae ink

  4. Partnerships for packaging innovation

PROJECTED IMPACT

People

  • Minimise contribution to increasing incidence of cancer, birth defects and cardiovascular disease linked to plastic pollution

  • Improve the fate of fishermen by reducing contribution to reduced fishing catches caused by plastic pollution

  • Contribute to reducing economic costs caused by plastic clean-up and declining coastal tourism

Planet

  • Reduce the impact of plastic pollution on millions of animal and plant marine species

  • Decrease D&G’s toxicity footprint by using non-toxic FSC-certified packaging substitutes

  • Minimise consumption of energy-heavy petroleum-based materials by eliminating single-use plastic

Profit

  • Returns from efficiency improvement: Reducing packaging will decrease costs and optimised “stackable” packaging will reduce shipping costs

  • Recapture attention and revenues from sustainability-minded consumers

  • The Pack4Good Initiative consultation may illuminate potential cost savings through additional efficiency improvements

  • High impact: In the absence of salespeople, packaging is the first consumer touchpoint, conveying a tangible message about D&G’s renewed commitment to responsible luxury

  • Products may be sold at a premium to respect margins

  • Cost decreases likely: As more competitors inevitably move towards low-energy packaging, costs will likely decrease as demand brings about innovation and economies of scale

  • Membership with the Sustainable Packaging Coalition will afford insight into innovation in the field at the cost of only a €5500 annual membership fee
